It is bordered by South Sudan to the north, Kenya to the east, Tanzania to the south, Rwanda to the southwest, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. The total area of Uganda is 241,038 sq km (93,072 sq mi). The terrain is mostly plateau with some hills and mountains in the east. The population of Uganda is estimated at 46 million people as of 2020. The official language of Uganda is English with Luganda also widely spoken. The currency used in Uganda is the Ugandan shilling (UGX). The area code for Uganda is +256 which can be used when dialing both within Uganda or from abroad. Lake Victoria lies on Ugandan soil and covers an area of about 59 000 sq km (23 000 sq mi). This lake forms part of a natural border between Tanzania and Kenya in addition to being one of Africa’s largest freshwater bodies and a major source for fish for many local communities.
