In terms of geography, much of Ukraine consists of fertile plains with some hills in the western part of the country and mountains in its eastern part. The Carpathian Mountains stretch across western and northern parts of Ukraine while other mountain ranges such as Gorgany are located further east. The highest peak in Ukraine is Mount Hoverla at 2061 m (6762 ft) above sea level. Other large bodies of water include Lake Synevyr which lies on Ukrainian soil and covers an area of about 28 sq km (11 sq mi). This lake forms part of a natural border between Slovakia and Poland as well as being one of Europe’s largest freshwater bodies and a major source for fish for many local communities.
