It covers a total land area of 65,610 km2 (25,332 sq mi), making it slightly larger than that of Latvia. The country is divided into nine provinces and 25 districts. The capital city of Sri Lanka is Colombo, which is also its largest city with a population of more than 6 million people. The geography of Sri Lanka consists mainly of mountains and hills which cover almost two-thirds of the country’s total land area. The highest peak in Sri Lanka is Pidurutalagala which stands at 2,524 m (8,281 ft). The country also has several major rivers such as the Mahaweli Ganga River and Kelani Ganga River which flow through Colombo and other large cities. The climate in Sri Lanka varies depending on location; however it generally has two distinct seasons including wet monsoon season from May to October and dry season from November to April. Temperatures can range from 16 °C (61 °F) in winter to 35 °C (95 °F) in summer. The international dialling code for Sri Lanka is +94 followed by either 7 digits for landlines or 10 digits for mobile phones e.g: +94 11xx xxx xx or +94 7xx xxx xxxx respectively where ‘x’ represents any digit between 0-9 depending on your telephone number.
