It has a coastline of over 2,500 km (1,553 mi) along the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. South Africa covers an area of approximately 1.2 million square kilometres (471,000 sq mi), making it one of the world’s largest countries by size. The country’s capital city is Pretoria and its largest city is Johannesburg. South Africa has a diverse geography that includes coastal plains along its western and southern boundaries as well as grasslands in the interior. The interior also features mountains such as the Drakensberg Range which runs along the eastern border with Lesotho. Along its northern border lies Botswana’s Kalahari Desert while to the south lies South Africa’s Great Karoo region which includes semi-desert terrain. South Africa has nine provinces – Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo Province, Mpumalanga Province, North West Province, Northern Cape and Western Cape – each with their own area code or ‘provincial code’ which consists of two digits followed by a three digit number e.g: 011 for Gauteng or 021 for Western Cape. The international dialling code for South Africa is +27 followed by either 10 digits for landlines or 11 digits for mobile phones e.g: +27 11 xxx xxxx or +27 82 xxx xxxx respectively where ‘x’ represents any digit between 0-9 depending on your telephone number. The national flag of South Africa consists of two equal horizontal stripes – one red and one blue – with a green triangle at its centre containing yellow stars representing each province in addition to yellow lines representing each nation’s different cultures and languages within them. The national anthem is “Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika” meaning “God Bless Africa” in Xhosa language which was adopted as national anthem in 1997 after being first sung in 1899 during anti-colonial protests against British rule over South Africa at the time.
